For some time, even before the WTC attack, I have been saying the key to fighting terrorism is to limit petrodollars to the Middle East. Every time any one of us buys a gallon of gasoline we are funding terrorism. This concept is slow to sink in. I see a little of it around the edges. As we move stronger into a period of McCarthyism the investigation of the flow of funds will become acute.

Bin Laden was our man, a guy who knew how to get things done and the CIA trained him. However, the path of Islamic Fundamentalism is following in the shoes formed by the former Soviet Union and the network of rebels they created. What were Communist Guerillas in the Philippines, Indonesia and other parts of the world are now Islamic Fundamentalists today.
These economies and societies. I am not saying that in many cases the management of the societies in question contributed to the conditions that produce terrorism and revolt. Certainly people like Marcos and others supported by the US were as brutal as any dictator alive today. But without external funding these groups would not last long.
