Now the real fun beginsThe 928, being built just as the electronics industry was under going a digital revolution, has a schizophrenic wiring legacy. There are no two years that are exactly the same. Wiring harnesses were made for both U.S. and ROW cars and often include options that would never be used. To further complicate matters 928 owners have no fear turning over such a sophisticated automobile to stereo, alarm and other add on butchers. In the restoration of the convertible I have spent more time working on wiring problems than any other single system. It was not so much that things did not work, but after two or three stereo systems, an all purpose remote system, a radar detector, a couple of cellular phones, changes needed for the convertible and jumpers in attempts to fix little problems the system was a mess. At first I worked around the edges just fixing the things that did not work - like the door lock system. While cleaning up the trunk I added some interior lights and a key lock for the trunk. Then when I installed the factory rear seats I had to remove the monster speakers and two amplifiers that were installed there. This left a lot of loose ends. Before installing the interior I needed to pull the dash as it has some cracks and I planned on having Portia's Parts Restoration service restore the dash and pod. Once the dash was out it became obvious just how much of a mess had been made of the wiring. What better time to repair these problems. This is where things sit now. While he dash is out I am going to pull the windshield and replace it with the correct green tint with top shading and replace the brake pedal with a brake / clutch pedal assembly in preparation for the 5 speed conversion. Well the wiring is complete and it is time to put in the center console and hook up the radio. Here are a couple of pictures of the finished job. There are a few wiring harnesses that are not stock but there are for the other systems added to the car. There is also extra wiring for the keyboard and computer screen for the GPS system. That comes later. |
