While restoring the convertible I learned a little about the 928 and have documented a few details. The information presented here is not intended to replace the Factory Manual, but as a supplement. Hopefully this site will become a living document. As quicker and simpler procedures are discovered they will be added. All comments welcome.
WARNING:: While all procedures on this web site have been tried there is no guarantee that the procedures will actually fix a problem or accurately diagnosis one. Each person's mechanical skills, abilities and availability of tools vary and thus the end result may be mixed or even disappointing. Indeed each person's tolerance and opinion of quality differs across a broad range. We will not be responsible for failure or broken parts that result from repairs attempted or completed.
As always the user is responsible for following all safety precautions, including proper support for the car, disconnecting the battery when necessary and not breathing or injecting dangerous chemicals. All applicable local, state and federal laws should be observed when modifying or painting the car or disposing of the used fluids.
Each procedure is ranked for skills form 1 to 5 and has a frustration level noted. High frustration levels are often better done by a qualified shop on a fixed bid basis even for highly skilled individuals.
Skill Levels:
1 - Routine maintenance. If you can change tires and oil then you can probably perform most level 1 repairs.
2 - Minor Repairs. These would include changing batteries, fan belts and fuel filters.
3 - Major Maintenance. These repairs include most scheduled maintenance items like brakes, shocks, exhaust system components and cables. It also includes fixing most oil leaks and servicing the automatic transmission.
4 - Professional Mechanics. These repairs like everything else are critical to be done correctly and require a high degree of mechanical experience. Included are Timing Belt, Clutch, R and R major components and electrical troubleshooting.
5 - 928 Specialist. These include highly specialized tasks like rebuilding the engine, transmission or other major components and proper suspension alignment.
Frustration Level
1 - Highly rewarding with very little effort.
2 - Some minor gulches but easily accomplished.
3 - A few skinned knuckles and four letter words but worth the end result.
4 - A major pain in the ass but still possible.
5 - Find the "other guy" to do the job.
Good Luck and Safe Motoring.
